Traveling Home: The Parmigiani Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante

To put a watch like the Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante through its paces, you require a setting as elegant as the watch itself.

Earlier this year at Watches & Wonders 2022, Parmigiani Fleurier unveiled the Tonda PF GMT Rattrpante, which put a unique spin on the GMT complication. The svelte case proportions and elegant dial make it one of our favorite finalists in the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève Men’s Complication category and easily a leading candidate for travel watch of the year.

As this is the time of year when many of us will be traveling home to see loved ones, we thought it was the ideal time to spend a little more time with the Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante and put it down on video.

About the Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante

As noted by my colleague Steven Rogers, the Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante’s 40mm case is an exercise in elegant minimalism, featuring simple lines and shapes that flow into each other. Meanwhile, the case’s decoration comes in the form of exquisite finishing and a subtle, knurled platinum bezel. At the same time, rounding out the case is the GMT function, which you can set by using a teardrop button so discreetly integrated into the lug near 8 o’clock that we’d forgive you if you don’t notice it at first.

The watch’s Prussian blue dial is finished in an intricate guilloché pattern, while the only bright pops of color come from the rose gold GMT hand and the rattrapante pusher inset on the crown.

But make no mistake: The fact that the home-time hand and the reset pusher are in the same rose gold is not a coincidence. Rather, the use of rose gold is there to remind you that one controls the other. So, while the teardrop pusher at 8 o’clock moves the GMT hand, the rattrapante pusher in the crown instantly syncs the re-synchs the home-time and away-time, like a rattrapante chronograph.

Take a look at our video below to see the function in action and see why we think it’s a top contender for travel watch of the year.
